The download button on this site links to a ZIP of the 1.16.5 branch of the Crackers Wither Storm Mod repository on GitHub. That is useful, but it is not the same as a ready-to-play mod file. Here is what you actually get and how to turn it into something Forge can load.

What the download contains

GitHub's branch archives package a repository's files as they exist at the time of download. For a Forge project, that normally means the Java source code, resources such as textures and models, and the build scripts including the Gradle wrapper (gradlew and gradlew.bat). A compiled .jar is not usually part of a source archive.

Why a ZIP is not a mod file

Forge only loads compiled mod files. If you drop the source ZIP into your mods folder, Forge will either ignore it or report an error, and the mod will not appear in the Mods list. This is the single most common reason people think the mod "doesn't work".

Rule of thumb: what goes in the mods folder should be a .jar built for your exact Minecraft and Forge version.

Building the .jar yourself

  1. Install a Java Development Kit. A JDK, not just a Java runtime. Forge projects for Minecraft 1.16.5 are typically built with Java 8, but check the project's build files for the exact requirement.
  2. Extract the archive to a folder with a short path and no special characters.
  3. Open a terminal in that folder.
  4. Run the build: gradlew build on Windows, or ./gradlew build on macOS and Linux. The first run downloads Gradle and Minecraft build dependencies, so it can take several minutes and needs an internet connection.
  5. Collect the result from build/libs. If there are several files, pick the main one rather than files labelled sources or dev.

If the build stops with a Java version error, the JDK doesn't match what the project expects. Install the right one and point JAVA_HOME at it before trying again.

Using a compiled release instead

If you would rather not build anything, the developer publishes compiled releases on the mod's official project pages. Choose the file labelled for your Minecraft version and Forge, then follow the installation guide.

Downloading safely

  • Prefer the developer's own repository or official project pages over mirrors.
  • Be sceptical of sites that bundle the mod into installers, .exe files or APKs.
  • With source code you can inspect what you are building, which is one advantage of the archive linked here.
  • Keep your security software up to date and scan unfamiliar files.
